Pharmacotherapy and Tobacco Treatment with Your Patients

Providers should encourage all patients attempting to quit tobacco products to use medication, unless otherwise contraindicated or in populations where there is a lack of evidence.  The correct and recommended use and dosing can double a person’s chances of quitting successfully.

This module will cover tips on using the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved cessation medications, dosing nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) for those trying to quit e-cigarettes, and the special considerations for use during pregnancy and while taking other medications.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the FDA-approved medications to assist patients in quitting
  • Explain the benefits and contradictions of each medication
  • Describe the free NRT available through QuitNow-NH
