Engaging Your Patients to Quit Tobacco: Motivational Interviewing

Developing a collaborative relationship with your patients in which they feel heard and understood is the first step in helping them explore their ambivalence about quitting tobacco.

This module will cover ways to successfully discuss with your patients their reasons to change, their past attempts to quit, their confidence and readiness to quit and the steps they are willing to take.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the spirit of motivational interviewing and why it is an effective approach in working with patients
  • Describe an OARS as an approach to elicit change talk in your patients
  • Understand how Motivational Interviewing can be applied in a clinical setting

To receive a certificate of completion or CEU for this lesson, you need to complete the Program Evaluation and Credit Documentation.
